Railways forced a single German clock

Before 1893, German states and cities kept their own local solar times, much like the rest of pre-standardized Europe, which made cross-border railway scheduling a persistent headache. Germany adopted a single national time — Mitteleuropäische Zeit, Central European Time — that year, driven by the same railway-coordination pressure that standardized time in Britain and the US a decade earlier. It's the same zone Berlin still uses today.

The one thing that stayed unified

During the Cold War division of Germany, East and West Berlin sat on opposite sides of one of the most heavily fortified borders on Earth — yet both used the same Central European Time. It was one of the few pieces of daily infrastructure the divided city never split. The debate today is less about division and more about whether the EU should abolish the twice-yearly clock change altogether: the European Parliament voted to end it in 2019, but member states have yet to agree on implementation, so the seasonal switch continues for now.

The clock that became a meeting point

At Alexanderplatz, in what was then East Berlin, the Weltzeituhr — World Time Clock — has stood since 1969, its rotating drum showing the current time in 148 cities around the world. Built as a symbol of the East German state's connection to the wider world during the Cold War, it outlived the border it stood near and remains one of Berlin's most recognizable landmarks today, still one of the city's default answers to "meet me at…"

The radio signal that quietly sets Germany's clocks

Since 1959, a longwave transmitter near Frankfurt called DCF77 has broadcast Germany's official time signal continuously, syncing radio-controlled clocks and watches not just domestically but across much of Central Europe. It's the German equivalent of the United States' WWVB signal, and one of the longest continuously operating time broadcasts in the world — quietly correcting millions of clocks that never need their owner to touch a button.

Time differences from Berlin

Berlin shares the EU's DST calendar with Paris, so the two rarely drift out of sync with each other.

Paris and Berlin are always identical, since both follow the same EU-wide CET/CEST schedule down to the exact weekend.

Working hours and when to call

Most Berlin offices run roughly 9:00 to 17:00, with a strong cultural emphasis on leaving on time at day's end compared to some neighboring countries.

• From Moscow: a two-hour gap that stays fixed all year, since neither city's offset relative to the other ever changes.

Public holidays vary by German state (Bundesland), so a date that's a holiday in Bavaria may be a normal working day in Berlin, and vice versa.

Daylight through the year

At roughly 52.5°N — further north than most of the continental US — Berlin sees one of the widest daylight swings in this list: around 8 hours in December, stretching to nearly 16 hours 50 minutes in June. Berlin summer evenings can stay light past 9:30 p.m., while December afternoons can feel like they end by 4:00 p.m.
