The only major city on two continents

Istanbul is the only metropolitan area among this site's cities — and one of very few on Earth — that physically straddles two continents. The Bosphorus strait splits the city into a European side and an Asian side, connected by bridges and an undersea metro line, with millions of residents crossing between continents as part of an ordinary commute. Istanbul's airports reflect the same split: Istanbul Airport sits on the European side, while Sabiha Gökçen International sits on the Asian side.

The country that made "summer time" permanent

In September 2016, Turkey announced it would stop turning its clocks back each autumn, staying on daylight saving time (UTC+3) year-round instead of alternating between UTC+2 in winter and UTC+3 in summer. The government cited energy savings and simplified scheduling as its reasoning. The move makes for an interesting mirror image against Mexico City's story on this site: Mexico abolished daylight saving entirely and locked onto its winter standard time, while Turkey abolished its winter clock and locked onto what used to be its summer daylight time — two countries reaching permanently fixed clocks from opposite directions.

Time differences from Istanbul

Istanbul's own clock never moves, so gaps to DST-observing cities shift only on the other city's calendar.

Moscow is the simplest comparison — both cities keep a fixed offset with no daylight saving, so the clocks always agree exactly.

Working hours and when to call

Istanbul keeps a standard 9:00–18:00 business day.

• From London or Cairo: comfortable overlap most of the day.
• From Dubai or Moscow: full overlap, one hour apart or less.
• From New York: an Istanbul morning call lands very early in New York — an Istanbul afternoon call works better.

At roughly 41°N, Istanbul sees a wide seasonal swing — about 9 hours 20 minutes of daylight around the December solstice, stretching to about 15 hours around the June solstice, with the fixed year-round UTC+3 offset pushing summer sunsets particularly late on the clock.

How we calculate this page: the live clock, UTC offset, and DST dates above are read directly from the IANA Europe/Istanbul time zone data via your browser, not hard-coded. Sunrise, sunset, solar noon, and twilight times are computed from Istanbul's exact coordinates (41.0082°N, 28.9784°E) using standard solar position formulas, recalculated on every page load. Moon phase is derived from the current synodic month. Airport distance uses the great-circle formula from those same coordinates to each airport's published location.
