The gun that has fired at noon for over a century

Every day at exactly noon — with the sole exception of midnight on New Year's Eve — a small cannon fires from the waterfront at Causeway Bay. The Noonday Gun has marked the middle of the day in Hong Kong since the 19th century and remains one of the territory's most enduring, if slightly eccentric, timekeeping traditions. Its origin is part documented history and part local legend: the most repeated story claims the gun was imposed as a punishment on the trading firm Jardine Matheson after one of its ships fired an unauthorized 21-gun salute reserved for colonial officials, forcing the company to fire a lesser daily gun in penance ever after. Historians note this origin story is unconfirmed — Jardine Matheson itself describes it as apocryphal, with several competing, unverified versions in circulation — but the company has maintained the tradition regardless, and the daily boom is now a fixture of the harbor soundscape, immortalized in Noël Coward's song "Mad Dogs and Englishmen."

A time zone that has never once changed with the seasons

Hong Kong has never observed daylight saving time. Its clock has sat at a fixed UTC+8 for its entire modern history, giving it one of the more stable timekeeping records of any major financial center. That steadiness stands out against its neighbor: mainland China briefly experimented with DST from 1986 to 1991 before abandoning it and standardizing the entire country — spanning roughly five geographic time zones — on a single fixed UTC+8, "Beijing Time." Hong Kong, following its own separate administrative track, simply never adopted seasonal clock changes at all, so its relationship to UTC+8 has been effectively unbroken.

At roughly 22.3°N, Hong Kong is close enough to the tropics that its seasonal daylight swing is modest — about 10 hours 45 minutes around the December solstice, stretching to about 13.5 hours around the June solstice.
