For roughly eight months of the year the city runs on Eastern Daylight Time (EDT, UTC-4); for the other four, Eastern Standard Time (EST, UTC-5). The clock-change dates above are worth bookmarking if you're scheduling anything that spans the switchover — the gap to Europe, in particular, narrows or widens by an hour for a few weeks each spring and autumn.

The city that time-zoned New England first

Before there was an Eastern Time zone, there was a Boston problem to solve. In the 1840s, every New England town still kept its own local solar time, and on the region's young railroads that was more than an inconvenience — it contributed to a string of collisions as trains running on different "correct" times converged on the same track. William Cranch Bond, director of the Harvard College Observatory, held the region's most precise timepiece, and starting in 1851 he began telegraphing a single master signal out to the railroads directly from the observatory — an arrangement historians have called the world's first public time-distribution service. It ran as a subscription business for decades, earning the observatory a few thousand dollars a year, before the US Naval Observatory took over the national time-signal role in 1892.

The clock on the Old State House

Boston's oldest surviving public building is the Old State House, completed in 1713. It didn't start out as a timepiece — a clock face wasn't added to its exterior until the early 1800s — but once it was there, it became genuinely load-bearing infrastructure: the clock was eventually wired into the Boston Fire Department's own alarm system, tying one of the city's oldest landmarks directly into how Boston kept and broadcast time well into the industrial era.
