How business days are counted
A business day here is any day that isn't marked as a weekend day and — if you've turned the option on — isn't a U.S. federal holiday. Everything else about the calendar, including leap years and month lengths, is handled automatically.
When counting between two dates, the "include start date" and "include end date" checkboxes control whether those specific days are counted if they happen to be business days themselves. This matters for questions like "how many business days do I have to respond," where the day you received something may or may not count.
When adding or subtracting business days, the calculator steps forward or backward one calendar day at a time, skipping weekends and holidays, until it has counted the number of business days you asked for. The start date itself is never counted as one of the days added.
Frequently asked questions
What counts as a business day?
By default, any Monday through Friday that isn't a public holiday. You can change which days count as the weekend, and choose whether U.S. federal holidays are skipped.
Does this calculator include the start and end date?
You choose. Checkboxes let you include or exclude the start date and end date independently when counting business days between two dates.
Can I use weekend days other than Saturday and Sunday?
Yes. Untick Saturday and Sunday and tick whichever days apply, such as Friday and Saturday, to match a different work week.
Which holidays does the calculator know about?
The optional holiday toggle skips the eleven U.S. federal holidays, with weekend-observed dates shifted the same way the U.S. government shifts them. Other countries' holidays aren't built in yet.
