Age Difference Calculator

Age gap calculator for two people

Find the exact age gap in years, months and days between two people, or between any two dates. Enter them in either order; the gap is the same. You also get the total days, weeks and years apart.

Runs entirely in your browser; nothing you enter is stored. Uses the same calendar-clamping convention as the age and date calculators on this site.

How the gap is measured

The difference is computed exactly the way the age calculator counts a single age: starting from the earlier date, advance whole years, then whole months (clamping to the end of short months), then count the leftover days. That produces the familiar "3 years, 4 months, 12 days" form. Alongside it, the tool shows the raw total in days — computed by subtracting absolute day counts, so leap years can never throw it off.

One subtlety worth knowing: a gap expressed in years-months-days is anchored to the earlier birthday, and because months vary in length, the "months and days" portion can read slightly differently than if you counted backwards from the later date. The convention used here — forward from the earlier date — is the one used by the site's other calculators and by most software.

The gap is fixed; the ages aren't always

Two people's age difference never changes, but the difference in their stated ages flickers during the year. Siblings born 2 years and 8 months apart are "2 years apart" for four months of the year and "3 years apart" for the other eight, depending on who has had a birthday most recently. If a form asks for an age gap in whole years, the days-based figure divided by 365.25 is the more honest answer than subtracting current ages.

Using it as an age gap calculator for couples

The most common reason people look up an age gap is a relationship: how far apart two partners are, or how a couple's gap compares with their parents'. Enter both birthdays and the result gives the exact gap in years, months and days, plus a decimal figure such as 7.42 years that is easier to compare. The gap stays the same for life, even though the difference between the two stated ages switches between two whole numbers during the year.

You may also come across the informal "half your age plus seven" rule, a folk guideline for the youngest partner considered socially typical. It is a rule of thumb, not a standard, and this calculator does not apply it; it simply reports the exact difference so you can make your own comparison.

Where exact gaps matter

Beyond curiosity, precise gaps show up in real rules: school enrolment cutoffs that separate siblings into different years by a few days, youth sports age brackets, insurance pricing that keys off both partners' birth dates, and inheritance or trust documents phrased around ages. In all of those, the day-level answer — not the rounded years — is the one that decides the outcome.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the age difference between two people?

Enter both dates of birth. The calculator starts from the earlier date, counts whole years, then whole months, then the remaining days, giving an answer like 3 years, 4 months, 12 days. It also shows the total number of days and weeks between the two dates.

Is an age gap calculator the same as an age difference calculator?

Yes. Age gap, age difference and age calculator difference all describe the same calculation: the exact time between two people's dates of birth. This tool answers all of them.

How do I find the age gap in years with decimals?

Divide the total days apart by 365.25, the average length of a year including leap years. The calculator shows this figure automatically, for example 7.42 years.

Does the order of the two dates matter?

No. The tool works out which date is earlier and measures forward from it, so entering them in either order gives the same gap.

Can I use it for things other than birthdays?

Yes — it's simply the gap between any two calendar dates: two product launches, two historical events, hire dates of two employees. Birthdays are just the most common use.

Why does the tool show weeks as well?

Gaps between young siblings are often discussed in weeks ("they're 20 months — about 87 weeks — apart"), and pregnancy planning works in weeks. It's the same number as the day total divided by seven.
