## The night the clocks jumped 18 minutes

From 1880 to 1920, Thailand (then Siam) kept its own local mean time, Bangkok Mean Time, set at UTC+6:42:04 — an offset with no relation to any standard meridian, simply based on Bangkok's precise longitude. On March 31, 1920, the country abandoned that homegrown standard and adopted the mean time of the 105th meridian east, seven hours ahead of Greenwich. The switch was announced just two weeks earlier, and it required clocks to jump forward by exactly 17 minutes and 56 seconds in a single moment — a far stranger transition than the familiar one-hour DST shift, and one that permanently aligned Thailand's clock with its regional neighbors.

**Trivia:** twice since then, Thailand has considered moving an hour further still — a 1993 proposal from the Ministry of Commerce and a 2001 government plan both aimed to shift the country to UTC+8 to align with Singapore and Malaysia, but both were withdrawn after public criticism.

## A clock that has never once sprung forward

Unlike many of the cities on this site, Thailand has never observed daylight saving time in any form. Its fixed UTC+7 offset, set in 1920, has never shifted seasonally — making Bangkok's relationship to UTC a rare constant among major Asian capitals, several of which (Seoul, Hong Kong) at least experimented with different offsets historically even if they don't use seasonal DST today.

## Time differences from Bangkok

Because Bangkok's own clock never moves, every gap below shifts only when the other city changes its own DST.

| City | Typical difference | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Singapore | Bangkok −1h | Singapore keeps a fixed UTC+8 |
| Mumbai | Bangkok +1h 30m | India keeps a fixed UTC+5:30 |
| Hong Kong | Bangkok −1h | Hong Kong has no DST either — a fixed gap |
| London | Bangkok +7h (+6h in BST) | UK observes seasonal DST |
| Sydney | Bangkok −3h (−4h in AEDT) | Sydney observes Southern Hemisphere DST |

Hong Kong is the simplest comparison — both keep a fixed offset with no daylight saving on either side, so the one-hour gap between them never changes.

## Working hours and when to call

Bangkok keeps a standard 9:00–18:00 business day.

- **From Singapore or Hong Kong:** full overlap, one hour apart.
- **From Mumbai:** comfortable overlap through most of the workday.
- **From London:** a Bangkok morning call lands overnight in London — better to aim for Bangkok's late afternoon.
- **From Sydney:** a Bangkok morning call lands early-to-mid afternoon in Sydney.

## Daylight through the year

At roughly 13.8°N, Bangkok's seasonal daylight swing is small — about 11 hours 20 minutes around the December solstice, stretching to about 12 hours 45 minutes around the June solstice, typical of a city this close to the equator.

**How we calculate this page:** the live clock, UTC offset, and DST dates above are read directly from the IANA Asia/Bangkok time zone data via your browser, not hard-coded. Sunrise, sunset, solar noon, and twilight times are computed from Bangkok's exact coordinates (13.7563°N, 100.5018°E) using standard solar position formulas, recalculated on every page load. Moon phase is derived from the current synodic month. Airport distance uses the great-circle formula from those same coordinates to each airport's published location.

## Frequently asked questions

### What time zone does Bangkok use?

Indochina Time (ICT, UTC+7), identified as Asia/Bangkok, with no daylight saving time.

### Has Thailand ever observed daylight saving time?

No. Thailand has never used daylight saving time; its clock has stayed on a fixed offset since 1920.

### Why did Thailand's clocks once jump by 18 minutes overnight?

In 1920, Thailand abandoned its old local Bangkok Mean Time (UTC+6:42:04) and adopted the standard 105th-meridian time (UTC+7), requiring a one-time jump of 17 minutes and 56 seconds to align with the new standard.

### Has Thailand ever considered changing its time zone?

Yes — proposals in 1993 and 2001 both aimed to shift Thailand to UTC+8 to align with Singapore and Malaysia, but both were withdrawn after public criticism.

### What is the time difference between Bangkok and Singapore?

A constant 1 hour, with Singapore ahead — neither city observes daylight saving time.

### What are normal business hours in Bangkok?

Most offices run roughly 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

### How do I convert Bangkok time to my own time zone?

Use the [time zone converter](https://watchtimeonline.com/tools/time-zone-converter.html), selecting Bangkok as the source zone and checking a specific date if the other zone observes DST.

### How low-lying is Bangkok?

Roughly 1.5 meters (5 feet) above sea level on average, making it one of the lowest-lying major capital cities and increasingly vulnerable to flooding.

### What is the time difference between Bangkok and Mumbai?

A constant 1 hour 30 minutes, with Bangkok ahead — India keeps a fixed UTC+5:30 offset with no daylight saving time.
